The University of Texas Permian Basin is now offering a Master’s of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT). This master’s program will prepare students to take their Board of Certification Exam to become Certified Athletic Trainers. The UT Permian Basin Master of Science in Athletic Training is one of 15 programs in Texas and one of only two programs located in West Texas.
“We developed the master of science in athletic training program to take an innovative approach to athletic training education and to prepare students to be responsive to the unique needs of their community, region and profession,” Alanna Dennison, Academic Chair of the Department of Human Performance and Athletics, said in a news release.
“As the profession grows and evolves, we were excited by the opportunity to contribute to the future of athletic training and support future professionals in their endeavors. We look forward to welcoming both regional and international students into the first cohort.”
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, employment of athletic trainers is projected to grow 23 percent from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations. Athletic trainers work in a variety of different careers including preventive services, professional athletics, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, high school and intercollegiate athletics, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation.
The program is seeking Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accreditation and expects a CAATE Site Visit in 2024, the release said.
