Rabbi Jordan Parr issues statement about Supreme Court decision about overturning Roe v. Wade.
“I personally do not like the idea of abortion. But then again, I will never have one so really, it’s not up to me. I want this decision to be between a woman and her doctor; I don’t need Gov. Abbott or Sen. Cruz in a woman’s bedroom, making the decision for her.
Jewish law clearly and unequivocally states that abortion is permitted. There are some limitations (it’s not birth control, for example) but if the life of the mother is threatened – medically, financially or spiritually – then abortion is allowed. And the Torah itself informs us (Ex. 21.22-25) that the killing of a fetus is not murder.
Believe me when I say that my sadness is rooted in the fact that the Supreme Court has trampled upon deeply held Jewish values, as well as the values of the majority of Americans.
To those who oppose abortion, I understand your position. But don’t come screaming at me unless you are also willing to support pre-natal care, expansion of Medicaid, well-baby care, money to fight opioid addiction, more money for our schools and an overhaul of the foster care system – the worst in the country, by the way. If you want to bring these babies into the world, it is your responsibility to care for them as well.”
