It was a night of celebration for the Permian girls volleyball team.
After the Lady Panthers showcased their seniors before the match against rival Odessa High, junior Jade Workman took over at the whistle.
Finishing with a match-high 13 kills, Workman paced Permian to a 25-9, 25-19, 25-7 victory against the Lady Bronchos in District 2-6A play Tuesday at the Permian Fieldhouse.
“I saw a lot of focus here at Senior Night,” Lady Panthers coach Gillian Herrera said. “Those girls were focused and took care of business when they were given the ball and they were productive.”
Workman and setter Layny Brown each finished with 18 assists, with Iliana Garcia adding 13 digs to the victory.
The Lady Panthers improved to 25-9 overall, 8-2 in district and clinched the No. 2 seed for the upcoming postseason.
Odessa High dropped to 13-18, 0-10.
It also was a milestone evening for Workman, who surpassed 1,000 kills for her career on the night.
“Tonight was just a culmination of all of her hard work and I am just ecstatic for her,” Herrera said. “She would have reached this milestone a lot sooner, but we only played 17 games her freshman year – for Jade to get this in her junior year is just unheard of.”
Workman gave credit to her teammates for the achievement.
“It says a lot about my team and the hard work that we all put in to be able to achieve this goal,” Workman said.
Odessa High coach Cody Dominguez praised Permian’s straight-sets victory.
The first meeting between the schools went five sets, with the Lady Panthers rallying from a two-set deficit for the victory on Oct. 7 at the OHS Fieldhouse.
“(The Lady Panthers) really did their research and they did a great job,” Dominguez said.
