The Odessa High tennis team is in the early stages of figuring out its best lineup for the fall season.
Bronchos coach Katelyn Watts was encouraged by what she saw after the first day of the Basin Brawl Friday at the Bob Clark Tennis Center.
Odessa High defeated Seminole 18-1 in the afternoon session after falling 10-6 in the morning session to Andrews.
“I just thing that we had better footwork in the afternoon than we did this morning,” Watts said. “I also do notice that they perform better when they’re tired.”
The Bronchos swept the boys and girls singles matches against the Indians with the lone victory for Seminole coming in the mixed doubles.
In girls doubles, senior Kayzsa Cox and junior Hannah Wilson defeated Seminole’s Alyssa Gonzales and Angie Klassen.
The two are among the more experienced players on the team but it is their first year being partnered together in doubles.
“I think that was a really big difference for me,” Wilson said. “She (Kayzsa) was helping me grow and lifting me up and we’re feeding good energy off of each other.”
It is just the second team match that Odessa High has played in the fall season and Cox added that she and Wilson have made good progress so far.
“We’re hitting better shots and carrying one another,” Cox said. “We carry each other well and we communicate better.”
Both girls went on to win their respective singles matches later in the afternoon with Cox defeating Klassen 8-4 and Wilson defeating Jessica Giesbrecht 8-0.
“Those two have a bright future,” Watts said of Wilson and Cox. “They just kind of click well together and I do see a different fire in them.”
Senior Matthew Thompson found plenty of success on the boys side as well for the Bronchos.
He started the afternoon partnered with Nithin Reddy and the duo went on to defeat Danni Klassen and Ruger Scott 8-3.
Thompson added a victory in singles against Franz Fehr 6-3, 6-0, and said that things started to pick up in the afternoon for him.
“I say the gears started to get greased up a little bit in the afternoon,” Thompson said. “The machine was ready to start and I had lots of energy to win the match.”
Thompson added that he knows he has to step up as one of the team leaders as the Bronchos are replacing the top three seniors from last season.
“I know that there’s a huge expectation to fill compared to last year because we had three phenomenal seniors leave,” he said. “There are some big shoes to fill and I’m going to continue to improve on trying to fill those shoes.”
The Bronchos will also look to carry the confidence built Friday into Saturday.
Odessa High hosts Hobbs (N.M.) at 9 a.m., followed by a match against Midland Christian Saturday at the Bob Clark Tennis Center.
“We just need to have a positive mindset,” Wilson said. “Eat some carbs to fill you up and get some good energy and a good night’s rest. Warm up and have a quick start is the goal.”
Seminole will face Midland High and Midland Legacy, respectively, starting at 9 a.m. at the Bush Tennis Center in Midland.

The Panthers defeated Seminole 18-1 while results were not available for the afternoon session against Andrews.
Permian is scheduled to host Midland Christian at 9 a.m. followed by Hobbs at the Pat Wikse Tennis Facility.
