VAN HORN A late scoring burst helped El Paso Eastwood defeat the Odessa High softball team 4-2 in the first game of their best-of-three Class 6A bi-district round series.
Both teams made timely defensive plays through the game’s first three innings before Odessa High grabbed the first lead in the top of the fourth.
With one out on the board, Nivea Saenz opened the scoring with a 2-run homer to center field that drove in Diveli Cherry.
El Paso Eastwood’s Samara Aguilera answered with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the Lady Bronchos’ advantage to 2-1.
That score held up until the bottom of the sixth when Miranda Guillen hit a 3-run home run to left field, bringing in Gabriela DeAnda and Navaeh Minjarez to put the Lady Troopers ahead by two runs.
Odessa High couldn’t tie the score up in the top of the seventh as its batters went down in order.
The Lady Bronchos (11-11-1 overall) will face the Lady Troopers (31-5) again at 10 a.m. Saturday in Van Horn, with Game 3 taking place at 2 p.m. if necessary.
