With the playoffs still a possibility when the Odessa High football team took the field against Wolfforth Frenship, the Bronchos were prepared to leave it all on the field.
They did.
In the end, however, Wolfforth Frenship quarterback Hudson Hutcheson was able to make one more play and that proved to be the difference as the Tigers earned a 49-42 victory in District 2-6A play Friday at Ratliff Stadium.
Odessa High running back Marcos Marichalar carried the ball 13 times for a team-high 81 yards and two touchdowns.
Quarterback Jaylien Jones added a 1-yard touchdown run and Ivan Carreon scored on a 3-yard run.
Jones finished 14-of-22 passing for 178 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception.
Carreon and Jalen Warren caught the touchdown passes.
“I was proud of them,” Odessa High head coach Dusty Ortiz said of the Bronchos’ response after the Tigers led 27-14 after the first quarter.
“They could have hung their heads, getting down early and giving up some big plays in the first quarter, but they never gave up. They showed the type of team that we knew they could be in a lot of instances; I was really proud of the kids and really proud of their effort.”
Hutcheson finished the night 25-of-36 passing for 410 yards and five touchdowns, with Landon Hutcheson rushing for 71 yards and two more scores.
Tate Beeles was the top target with seven receptions for 216 yards and three touchdowns, with Damien Rodriguez and Leyton Stone each adding one scoring reception.
And, with the game tied in the waning moments of the fourth quarter, Hudson Hutcheson made the big play when his team needed it.
Facing a fourth-and-goal from the Odessa High 16, with the Tigers leaving their offensive on the field, Hutcheson was able to extend the play with his feet
Then, as he was being taken to the ground by Bronchos’ defensive back Zayne Minjarez, the Tigers’ quarterback fired toward the end zone where his pass split a pair of defenders into the hands of wide receiver Leyton Stone for the game-winning score with 3:06 remaining to play.
The victory improves the Tigers to 7-2 overall, 3-1 in district and clinched a playoff spot.
They are in a three-way tie with Midland Legacy and Permian at the top of the district standings, with San Angelo Central in fourth at 2-2.
Odessa High now is 3-6, 0-4 and will close out the regular season next week against Midland Legacy at Astound Broadband Stadium in Midland.
