Midland Legacy re-entered the District 2-6A title conversation and at the same time ended Permian’s unbeaten start to the season with a 49-38 win against the Panthers Friday at Ratliff Stadium.

With the win, Legacy improved to 3-5 overall, 2-1 in District 2-6A while Permian fell to 7-1, 2-1.

Wolfforth Frenship, which defeated Odessa High 56-7 Friday in Wolfforth, remains the only undefeated team in the district at 7-1, 3-0.

Permian will face Frenship at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 at Ratliff Stadium.

“We did really good,” Legacy head coach Clint Hartman said. “We had a great scheme. We have a very good staff. I will say our kids fought their tails off. Permian’s a good football team. They came in 7-0. That’s not easy to do.”

Legacy quarterback JP Reyes went 17-of-27 for 198 yards passing and four touchdowns.

Rebel wide receiver Kayden Iglesias had eight receptions for 82 yards and two touchdowns.

Legacy’s Aiden Serrano had nine rushes for 91 yards and two touchdowns.

Permian quarterback Jakob Garcia went 8-of-16 for 130 yards and one interception and two touchdowns.

Permian wide receiver Cayden Hernandez had three receptions for 88 yards and a touchdown.

Running back Gavin Black had 28 carries for 217 yards and two touchdowns for the Panthers.

“It’s disappointing that we lost the game,” Permian head coach Jeff Ellison said. “Hats off to Midland Legacy. We talked about it all week about mistakes and turnovers and it all caught up to us. We need to regroup and get ready for Frenship next week.”

After forcing the Panthers to punt, the Rebels capitalized on good field position and scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass to Kayden Iglesias on a four-play, 28-yard scoring drive for a 7-0 lead with 9:03 left in the first quarter.

The Panthers responded by scoring on a 44-yard touchdown run by Tyran Williams and Iker Munoz’s PAT tied the game at 7-7 with 6:40 left.

Once again, Legacy was gifted good field position and didn’t disappoint, scoring on a touchdown pass of 27-yards to Caden Ellis to make it 14-7 with 2:43 remaining.

Legacy doubled its lead on an interception return for a touchdown by Trey Jefferson with one second left on the clock and the Rebels had a 21-7 lead heading into the second quarter.

Gavin Black took off on a 65-yard run and was brought down at the Legacy 5-yard line early in the quarter.

He scored on the following play as the Panthers trimmed the Rebels’ lead to 21-14 with 9:29 left.

Legacy moved its lead back to 14 points after a touchdown pass to Serrano with six minutes to go in the quarter as the Rebels’ lead became 28-14.

Permian struck back with a touchdown pass from Garcia to Cayden Hernandez for 62-yards and the Panthers’ deficit became 28-21 with 4:43 left.

Permian attempted a 49-yard field goal by Munoz and the kick was good as the half ended with the Panthers trailing 28-24.

However, the third quarter would not go the Panthers’ way as the Rebels used a 14-6 run to build a 12-point lead.

Legacy’s lead was 42-30 at the end of the third quarter.

A muffed punt by the Panthers was recovered by the Rebels at the Permian 32 with 7:24 left in the game as the visitors remained in front.

Legacy made the Panthers pay for the mistake by scoring a on a touchdown run by Serrano with 4:11 to extend the visitors’ lead to 49-30.

Permian added a late touchdown with a pass to Williams and the Panthers got the two-point conversion but it wasn’t enough to overcome their deficit.

Legacy will next face Midland High at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 at Astound Broadband Stadium.
