HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: OHS season opener canceled due to lightning delays

All Odessa High and Amarillo High wanted to do was play a football game.

The weather gods had different plans.

The Bronchos’ season opener against the Sandies lasted all but six plays before Mother Nature shut things down and kept the game grounded.

After numerous lightning delay restarts, the game was officially called at around 9:44 p.m. with Amarillo High leading 6-0.

A 30-minute weather delay forced the game to start at around 7:30 p.m.

Then, after playing two minutes of game time, both teams were forced off the field again.

As for the actual game, it didn’t take the Sandies long to get going.

Bryson Brown returned the opening kickoff on a 95-yard touchdown run for the visitors. Amarillo High wasn’t able to get the 2-point conversion as the run came up short with 11:46 left in the first quarter.

A few plays into Odessa High’s first offensive drive, another lightning strike occurred within nine miles of Ratliff, forcing the teams off the field and the fans out of the stadium.

The teams would be unable to restart.

Odessa High will next face L.D. Bell at 7 p.m. Sept. 6.
