WICHITA FALLS The Odessa High football team continued to show moves in the right direction in a shootout against Wichita Falls Rider.
The Bronchos fell by a 47-43 score Friday at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
Odessa High’s first drive saw the offense look like a well-oiled machine, moving the ball down the field with a 17-play, 77-yard drive.
Things didn’t end well for the Bronchos though, as they failed to convert a fourth-down attempt and turned the ball over on downs at the Rider 19.
The home team capitalized on the opportunity when Anquan Willis ran it in from seven yards out to take a 7-0 lead.
It took Odessa High almost no time to figure things out, as quarterback Diego Cervantes ran it in from nine yards out 80 seconds later to tie the game.
Both offenses exploded throughout the second quarter, scoring three touchdowns each before going into the halftime break.
Cervantes gave the Bronchos a lead by running another score from the 9, then Javonte Delce took in his own 3-yard rushing touchdown to put Odessa High up 21-7.
That was when Rider began feeding the ball to Willis, who picked up 48 yards on four carries and capped off his team’s drive with a 4-yard score.
The Bronchos then dug into their bag of tricks when a 10-yard Cervantes pass to Ivan Carreon was pitched to Delce on a lateral and he ran it in from 61 yards out.
Odessa High held a 28-13 lead with 5:02 left in the first half, but Rider ended up scoring 13 unanswered points to go into halftime trailing by two.
Rider got the second half started with the momentum on its side when TJ Crump blocked a punt and Keiran Shaw returned it for a 9- yard touchdown to give the home team its second lead of the contest.
Cervantes would ultimately find the end zone from 9 yards out with his legs for the third time to put Odessa High up 35-33 and that score held up for the entire third period.
Rider’s Kaden Jones came up big in the fourth quarter as he returned an interception for a 29-yard score and he hauled in a 44-yard receiving touchdown from Jack Pitts.
Although Odessa High’s Dajuan Green punched one in from the 3 to momentarily give the Bronchos a 43-40 lead, Jones’ scores ended up being the difference makers to seal the 47-43 win.
