MIDLAND Midland High dominated the first half and that was exactly what the Bulldogs needed as they defeated Odessa High 49-28 in the District 2-6A open for both teams Friday at Grande Communications Stadium.
Midland High gained 521 yards on offense, 350 on the ground, as it used its option attack to keep the Bronchos guessing the entire night.
The Bulldogs (2-3 overall, 1-0 in district) had four scoring plays of more than 20 yards and also recovered a fumble in the end zone for another touchdown.
Odessa High (2-3, 0-1) could get nothing going offensively in the first half, running just seven plays in the first quarter and 16 in the first 24 minutes.
Bronchos quarterback Diego Cervantes misfired on his first four passes and finished 23 for 37 for 304 yards and two touchdowns.
Cervantes also rushed for 99 yards and two scores.
Odessa High wide receiver Terrance Samuel was the main target on the night, catching nine passes for 165 yards as the Bulldogs blanketed wide receiver Ivan Carreon the entire night.
Midland High running back Zion Ward carried the ball 21 times for 116 yards and one touchdown, with backfield mate Brylee Perez finishing with seven carries for 116 yards and one score, a 57-yard sprint that put Midland High ahead 21-0 with 9:49 remaining in the first half.
Walls finished with 58 yards rushing and two scores.
