Permian already held a double-digit lead against rival Odessa High when the Panthers tried a little trickery that backfired.
After a Tate Terry 35-yard field goal, he then attempted to loft the ensuing kickoff over the first line of Bronchos.
The football didn’t find its intended target, instead falling short and into the arms of Odessa High’s Nicolae Hernandez at the Bronchos’ 40.
“There was a patch of grass 25 yards wide,” Permian coach Jeff Ellison said. “We just didn’t execute and gave them the short field.”
Suddenly, after runs of 20 and 5 yards by Jorge Valdez, followed by a 22-yard scamper by quarterback Jaylien Jones on a third-down play, the Bronchos had first-and-goal at the Panthers’ 3.
That’s when the stars of the evening for Permian made their first appearance.
On first down, Valdez was stuffed at the line of scrimmage for no gain.
Second down saw Jones get one yard on a keeper
After an incomplete pass on third down, Jones again was stopped short, turning the ball over on downs to the Panthers with 3:06 remaining in the first quarter.
“All year our defense has been flying to the ball and making plays,” Ellison said. “That stand really changed things.”
That and the time-consuming drive the Permian quarterback Rodney Hall was about to direct in his final crosstown rivalry.
Starting at their own 2, the Panthers marched 98 yards in 17 plays, taking eight minutes, 22 seconds off the clock.
Running back Juzstyce Lara capped the march with a 1-yard touchdown run and Permian was on its way to a 38-7 victory in District 2-6A play on a rainy Friday at Ratliff Stadium.
Permian improved to 6-0 overall, 1-0 in District 2-6A and won for the ninth straight time in the series.
Odessa High dropped to 3-3, 0-1.
“Going into it, both the offensive and defensive staffs did a great job,” Ellison said. “They’ve (Odessa High) got some weapons over there and we were able to take away their main target (Ivan Carreron).
“On offense, we’ve got a lot of guys that have played a lot of football.”
Odessa High was able to get on the scoreboard on Jalen Warren’s 90-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.
Lara finished the night with 22 carries for 89 yards and three touchdowns, while Tabarie Jones added 93 yards on six carries, including a 49-yard touchdown on a reverse around the right corner with 2:20 remaining in the third quarter.
Hall scored on a 9-yard run to open the scoring at the 9:08 mark of the first quarter.
Permian finished with 55 carries for 356 yards rushing, the most Odessa High has surrendered this season.
Odessa High head coach Dusty Ortiz understood the challenge his team faced.
“Permian has a big offensive line and have some really talented backs, so it’s hard for anybody to contain them,” Ortiz said. “You have got to play a perfect technique and almost pretty much make perfect stops.”
Permian was just as stout on defense.
The Panthers gave up just 137 yards of offense (89 rushing, 48 passing), shutting down the Bronchos’ quick-strike offense by limiting the number of looks that Carreron got throughout the contest.
Cornerback Deonte Bass, who also carried the ball and played on special teams, matched up on the outside with Carreron, with safety Bryce Wood moving over to help out numerous times.
Bass was at his best as the game was winding down and the Bronchos against inside the Panthers’ 10.
On back-to-back, 1-on-1 situations in the left corner of the end zone, Bass was able to force Carreron to the boundary and then out of bounds before making a catch.
That proved to be the final chance for the Bronchos with 37 seconds remaining to play.
“Credit to the Panthers’ defense,” Odessa High offensive coordinator Creighton Reed said. “They are well coached; they really good players.
“They are a really good football team.”
