It was a busy Saturday for local volleyball and tennis teams.
The Permian, Odessa High and Compass Academy volleyball teams all advanced to the second day of play at the Monahans Tournament and came away with a pair of runner-up finishes.
Permian dropped a tight Gold Bracket championship match as West Plains held on for a 23-25, 28-26, 25-23 victory at the Jerry Larned Athletic Complex.
Earlier in the day, the Lady Panthers had defeated Odessa High (25-20, 25-22) and Canutillo (20-25, 25-16, 25-15) to advance.
Jade Workman finished with 36 kills and 32 assists on the day, with setter Layny Brown adding 55 assists directing the offense.
Odessa High, after falling to Permian in the first match, saw host Monahans earn a victory in the next contest to eliminate the Lady Bronchos.
Monahans would continue on to capture the consolation championship.
In the Silver Bracket, Compass Academy opened the day with a victory against Buena Vista and then defeated Midland Classical to reach the championship match.
That’s where the run ended for the Lady Cougars as Greenwood won the title.
Pecos defeated Midland Classical for third place, while Fort Stockton was able to earn the consolation title.
Midland Legacy sent a JV squad to compete and won the Bronze Bracket championship after defeating Amarillo Caprock.
Crane finished third and Snyder battled back for the consolation championship.
On the tennis courts, Odessa High faced a trio of school during the annual Basin Brawl, finishing with a 1-2 record.
Highlighting the play for the Bronchos was Nithin Reedy, who went 4-2 overall (3-0 in singles) and Olivia Cabral, also 4-2 overall.
