For Will Adams, each week has seen him travelling to different golf tournaments this summer.
One in particular that will stand out was the West Texas Amateur Championship that he clinched on July 23.
The Odessa native, who graduated from Permian in 2018, took the honors at this summer’s West Texas Amateur Championship which took place last month in Abilene.
For Adams, it was his first West Texas Amateur title.
Adams shot three stellar rounds of 63-64-67.
“Honestly, it was incredible,” Adams said. “Having my name on that trophy meant a lot to me. I have a lot of friends who have won that tournament so it’s real special to have my name on that trophy with them.”
He finished ahead of Davis Seybert of Midland as the Permian Basin was well-represented in the tournament.
“I’ve known Davis for a while,” Adams said. “I thought he would steal the show from me. … he represented West Texas well. I’ve played golf with him quite a bit. I was proud to see the West Texas boy son the leader board.
This past weekend, he competed at the Texas State Open in Tyler.
Unfortunately, he would miss the cut, shooting six over and going 71-75.
Playing in the humidity in East Texas took a little bit of getting used to.
“If you’re not hitting the tee ball good, then yeah, it can be difficult,” Adams said. “Every hole, both sides of the fairway can be pretty wide. You can still lose golf balls out there.”
However, last week’s tournament didn’t distract from the successful summer he’s had golfing all over.
“Honestly, it’s probably my favorite thing to do,” Adams said. “I love being on the road. I love traveling to different tournaments and seeing all my golf buddies at each event as well as meeting new people. I really don’t mind it. It’s more fun for me than it is a hassle. I enjoy being on the road and I enjoy playing in golf tournaments.”
Adams plans on competing in a tournament in Monahans coming up.
Other tournaments he’s won include the 2019 North Texas Amateur at Watters Creek in Dallas.
He also won the Plum Creek Amateur and was named the 2019 Texas Player of the Year for Texas Golf Association.
During 2019, Adams earned 1,650 points during the Texas Golf Association qualifying tournaments to win the award which is presented annually to the player that accumulates the most performances points throughout the calendar year.
Adams recently graduated from the University of Texas in San Antonio.
With hopes of joining the PGA Tour in the future, Adams will now be turning his attention to Q-School (qualifying school) this fall.
“The next step is to play good golf and continue to work on my craft,” Adams said. :Hopefully, I can make it to Q-School in September and hopefully get a run at the tour.
