Permian’s Briannah Garcia picked the right day to run her personal best.
Garcia, who has been the Lady Panthers’ top runner all season, finished fourth at the District 2-6A Cross Country Championships on Thursday at UTPB Park.
She stoppped the clock in 20 minutes, 48.8 seconds and qualified for the Region I-6A Championships on Oct. 24 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.
“She ran strong, comfortable,” Permian cross country coach Jasmin Torres said. “She was just chilling coming through over here on the hill.
“Super stoked for her. Now we can personalize the training for her to get ready for regionals; we’ve got one of her training partners, Miranda (Chavez), to run with her.”
Chavez finished just outside the Top 10, placing 13th in 21:52.6 to just miss qualifying.
It was a good day for the Odessa High squad as well as it watched Raquel Martinez sprint the final 100 yards to finish ninth in 21:31.3.
She also advanced to the regional meet in 10 days and head coach Ricky Santiago was please with the effort.
“Raquel was the one we though might have a chance to get through,” he said. “She ran her race and it was nice to see her get there are the end.
“I was upset last week with they way we ran at the Odessa Invitational. We could have run better, but we still have Raquel to get ready for regionals.”
Midland Legacy scored 45 points to win the team race, with Wolfforth Frenship in second with 47.
San Angelo Central was third with 57, followed by Odessa High (106) and Permian (109).
