LUBBOCK The Odessa College softball team went into the NJCAA Region 5 Tournament at Lubbock Christian University as the No. 1 seed.
It backed up that seed Sunday by winning the tournament to advance to the NCJAA Division I Softball Championship, May 24-28, in Yuma, Ariz.
But it wasn’t easy for the Lady Wranglers.
After winning their first game Friday, they lost 4-2 to Howard College on Saturday when the Lady Hawks homered in their final at bat.
Sunday, Odessa College edged Western Texas, 6-4, in its first elimination game.
Then, the Lady Wranglers exacted a measure of revenge against Howard College with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 7-6 victory to force the “if necessary” game for the title.
Odessa College (51-5-1) made sure there were no anxious moments in the finale, running away to a 12-4 victory to capture its second consecutive trip to the national championship.
