Falcons fall to Rams

The Angelo State men’s basketball team used a strong second half to earn a 75-72 victory against UTPB in Lone Star Conference play Tuesday at the Falcon Dome.

Kevon Godwin scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Rams (16-3 overall, 1-2 in conference), with Fredelin De La Crux finishing with 18 and Tre Mitchell chipping in 13 to the victory.

Azariah Seay scored 18 points to lead UTPB (10-12, 4-9), with Keyon Craddock finishing with 13, Max Warren 12 and DaJuan Jones 10 in the loss.

The Rams trailed by five at halftime, but opened the second half with a 15-1 run to take a 47-38 lead with 13:32 remaining to play.

UTPB clawed its way back into the game and regained the lead, 68-67, with 1:10 remaining to play on Warren’s field goal.

Angelo State went back in front on Steve Webb’s layup with 40 seconds remaining and the Falcons were unable to move back in front.

UTPB returns to play against Western New Mexico at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Falcon Dome.

Trying for two

The UTPB women’s basketball team looks to climb back into the postseason picture when it hosts Western New Mexico at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at the Falcon Dome.

The Falcons are coming off a 74-60 victory against St. Mary’s on Saturday in San Antonio.

Western New Mexico (5-11 overall, 3-9 Lone Star Conference) defeated UTPB (9-10, 6-7) in the first meeting on Jan. 1 in Silver City, N.M.

Avalon Munoz currently leads the Falcons in scoring at 10.8 points per game, with Holly Hemmeline next at 10.3.

Munoz scored a career-high 31 points in UTPB’s most recent home game, an 80-70 victory against Midwestern State on Jan. 14.

Double dip

The Odessa College men’s and women’s basketball teams host Frank Phillips College in Western Junior Athletic Conference play Thursday at the OC Sports Center.

The women’s game is scheduled to begin at 5:45 p.m., with the men following at 7:30 p.m.

The Wranglers (18-1, 5-0) are ranked No. 2 in the nation and coming off a 70-67 victory against Midland College on Monday.
