The Odessa College baseball team split a Western Junior College Athletic Conference doubleheader against Frank Phillips College Friday at Wrangler Field.
Frank Phillips College won the first contest 13-4, with the Wranglers closing out Game 2 with an 8-7 win.
Odessa College kept things close early in the opening contest, trailing 3-2 through the first three innings.
Eight unanswered runs between the fourth and sixth innings gave the Plainsmen breathing room.
The Wranglers didn’t get on the board again until the bottom of the seventh when a Chase Diggins RBI double brought in Brandon Rincones.
Diggins then reached home plate on a passed ball, but it wasn’t enough for Odessa College to close the gap.
The Wranglers got out to a quicker start in Game 2, holding a 5-1 lead through five innings.
Frank Phillips College managed to tie the game up at 7-7 after outscoring Odessa College 6-2 in the seventh and eighth frames, seeking a sweep on the first day of the conference series.
Diggins ultimately closed out the contest with a bunt in the bottom of the ninth, driving in Jake Gonce for the final score.
Odessa College (22-16 overall, 9-9 conference) will host another doubleheader against the Plainsmen, starting at noon Saturday at Wrangler Field.
