Texas Medical Board sets new physician licensing record

The Texas Medical Board – for the third year in a row – has issued a record number of physician licenses, ending the fiscal year with 7,060 licenses issued. The state’s 2023 fiscal year ended on Aug. 31.

“The record-breaking number of licenses issued this recent fiscal year is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the Texas Medical Board, especially during challenging times. The Board’s incredible staff continue to rise to the occasion and have done a tremendous job licensing physicians in a timely and efficient manner,” Texas Medical Board President Dr. Sherif Z. Zaafran, M.D., said in a news release.

“As a result of the Board’s efforts, there are now over 100,000 physicians who hold a Texas medical license,” continued President Zaafran. “The Board remains committed to doing its part in licensing qualified physicians to meet our state’s growing health care needs and bolster the health care workforce in Texas.”

The TMB’s previous record year-ending total for physician licenses was 6,584 last fiscal year, which eclipsed the 2021 record by 1,280 licenses (5,304).

As of Sept. 1, there are 102,602 Texas licensed physicians.
