On Good Friday, April 15, Connection Christian Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church will join together to offer a Community Good Friday event at noon at Memorial Gardens. This brief outdoor service of prayer, music, and reflection will mark the Christian observance of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
“In John 17, Jesus prays for the unity of all believers, so that the world may know who he is by all of his followers working together,” said the Rev. Dr. Dawn Weaks of Connection Christian Church. “This (Good Friday) service is open to all churches and all people. It’s a chance for the entire community to come together and worship.”
In the Christian tradition, Good Friday is a part of the Triduum, three holy days preceding Easter celebrations. For centuries, Christians have marked Thursday, Friday, and Saturday preceding Easter with special occasions for worship, fasting, and prayer. The Community Good Friday service provides the opportunity to participate in that tradition for people who have lost their connection to a church, work during their church’s services, feel uncomfortable going in a church building, or have never participated before.
“The Community Good Friday service is about the mission of our churches — bringing the gospel of Jesus to the community. We are bringing the important traditions of our faith out from behind church walls and into the places we need them every day,” says the Rev. John Wamsley, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian, in a news release.
The service will take place in the Memorial Gardens pavilion area and will include music, prayer, personal reflection, and an offering for a church that is helping tornado victims in Jacksboro, Texas. Contact Rev. Dr. Dawn Weaks ([email protected]; 432-248-4483) for more information.
