GUEST VIEW: July 4th a day to reflect on nation’s history

As we gather with family and friends to celebrate the Fourth of July, we are reminded of the immense privilege we share as Americans. This day marks the birth of our great nation built on the principles of freedom, democracy, and the pursuit of happiness. It is a day to reflect on our history, honor the sacrifices made by countless individuals, and reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding the values that make the United States the beacon of hope and liberty it is today.

For 20 years, I had the honor of serving as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force, defending our nation against foreign and domestic threats. I flew combat missions against ISIS over Syria and Iraq and have been stationed in multiple regions around the world. The experiences I gained during my military career instilled in me a profound appreciation for not only the significance of our country but also for what it takes to protect it. Each mission underscored the importance of vigilance and the necessity of unwavering dedication to the protection of our homeland.

I am a proud Texan and a staunch conservative. I believe in the foundational principles that have guided our nation since its inception. Our Constitution, our freedoms, and our way of life are worth defending with every ounce of our strength. This belief continues to drive me in my current role as a member of the Homeland Security Committee, where I uncover and learn about the myriad threats that our country faces daily.

From cyberattacks, to known and suspected terrorists crossing our southern border, to the ever-evolving nature of global conflicts, the threats to our nation are real and persistent. The Fourth of July is a reminder that our independence and our way of life are not guaranteed—they must be actively protected and preserved.

This Independence Day, let us celebrate the freedoms we enjoy and recommit ourselves to the duty of protecting those freedoms. Let us honor the sacrifices of those who came before us by ensuring that our children and grandchildren inherit a country that is safe, strong, and free. The United States of America is the best country the world has ever seen, and it is our responsibility to safeguard its future.

I continue to have hope every day for our country and believe we will continue to be a beacon of freedom across the world. Happy Independence Day, and may God continue to bless the United States of America.
