AUSTIN The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit statewide news organization, will host a free, in-person and livestreamed event, “Adapting to a hotter Texas,” taking place from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, in Studio 919, located at 919 Congress Ave., Sixth Floor, in downtown Austin.
What are local governments and nonprofits doing to better prepare for rising temperatures? How can communities — with infrastructure built for a narrow range of temperatures — prevent the most dangerous effects of extreme heat? The conversation will feature a community advocate and local officials from South Texas and El Paso and will explore the ways communities can adapt to a hotter Texas.
The panel includes:
- Erin Douglas, the Tribune’s climate reporter
- Nicole Alderete-Ferrini, climate and sustainability officer, City of El Paso
- Dr. Iván Meléndez, Hidalgo County Health Authority
- Stefania Tomaskovic, coalition director, Coalition for Environment, Equity and Resilience (CEER)
The conversation will be followed by a live audience Q&A with studio attendees featuring Dave Harmon, the Tribune’s environment, energy and immigration editor.
This event will also be livestreamed and available for on-demand viewing afterward at texastribune.org/events.
