Shooting in West Odessa leaves one dead

A 49-year-old man was arrested Sunday after he called 911 and confessed to shooting another man to death in West Odessa.

According to an Ector County Sheriff’s Office report, Omar Babativa Beltran told dispatchers he killed a man in the 12000 block of West Love Drive Trail.

When deputies arrived, Beltran came outside the residence at their request and threw two handguns down on the porch, the report stated. They then went inside the home and found Raul Hernandez Uribe, 44, dead in the living room with gunshot wounds.

A 61-year-old witness told deputies he saw Beltran shoot an unarmed Uribe without provocation, the report stated. The witness said Beltran also pointed the gun at him and told him he couldn’t leave.

Deputies noted Beltran had two holsters, one inside his waistband on the left and another on the outside on the right.

Sheriff Mike Griffis said the motive is unknown at this point, but the men had been drinking beer.

Beltran was booked into the Ector County jail on suspicion of murder and aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon. He’s being held on surety bonds totaling $350,000.
