School zones active as students return to school

MIDLAND As students head back to school, Midland ISD is emphasizing the importance of school zone safety. Drivers should be aware of more school buses on our roads and an increase in pedestrian traffic.

Flashing school zone lights will be activated on days when school is in session. MISD Police will have a visible presence around all schools and drivers should be aware that there will be a zero tolerance policy for speeding.

“Our department will be very present as we return to regular patrols at schools,” MISD Police Chief Scott McKown said in a news release. “Drivers should be aware that school is back in session and be mindful of students who may attempt to cross the street.”

MISD urges drivers to help keep our students and community safe by observing school zone signs, slowing down, and watching for pedestrians. Vehicles on both sides of the road are required to stop for a school bus when the bus stop sign is displayed. Drivers should also be reminded that using a cell phone in a school zone is prohibited and could result in a fine.

Important dates to remember:

  • Buses begin practice routes Aug. 8.
  • Students return to all schools Aug. 13.

Midland ISD is committed to ensuring the safety of all students and staff as we start the new school year.
