Salvation Army Red Kettles falling behind

With only days left before Christmas, and with sub-freezing weather in the forecast, The Salvation Army in Odessa finds itself falling behind the red kettle goal for 2022. The annual Red Kettle Campaign is The Salvation Army’s primary fundraiser of the year. Every dollar donated supports programs that make a difference in the lives of people year-round in Odessa.

“We continue to see increased need from those who have been affected by the downturn in the economy and loss of jobs,” Major Luis Melendez, Commanding Officer at The Salvation Army said in a news release. “The Red Kettle Campaign is falling significantly behind as we work toward our 2022 kettle goal of $70,000. We have currently raised $51,400 and are counting on the community to dig deep in the remaining days of the season to ensure we can continue to provide help to those who come to us for assistance. The Salvation Army is so grateful for your support, and we want you all to know that every dollar helps and stays right here in Odessa. Your support means we can serve a meal to someone who is hungry, keep the lights on for a family struggling to pay a utility bill and provide a pathway to self-sufficiency for struggling families in our community for months to come.”

The Salvation Army bells will continue to ring outside stores through Christmas Eve and the organization is praying that with the community’s support it can still reach its fundraising goal. “This is going to be a particularly challenging week as we prepare for the freezing weather that is forecast on Thursday and Friday. This will inevitably mean less people passing and giving to the kettles, but also an increase in those coming to The Salvation Army for assistance looking for a hot meal and shelter from the cold,” said Melendez.

An average of 30 people daily receive a hot dinner at The Salvation Army, Monday-Friday, and the shelter is open during inclement weather. “We provided more than 20 nights of shelter last week to individuals seeking a warm and safe place to sleep,” said Melendez. “And we anticipate the shelter being open again Tuesday through Saturday this week due to the expected sub-freezing temperatures that are forecast. I am thankful for the volunteers from Iglesias Unidas who are helping staff the shelter overnight.”

Volunteers are crucial to the success of the red kettle campaign. It’s not too late and is easier than ever for individuals, families, groups and businesses to sign up as a volunteer bellringer, the release said. Visit www.RegisterToRing.com and select the location, day and time you would like to ring.

“If you aren’t able to get outside and ring the bell in person, you can always give to our virtual kettle from the comfort of your own home! Go to www.salvationarmytexas.org/ODESSA and select “Donate to Our Kettle.” Every gift helps,” said Melendez.
