MIDLAND Midland County Commissioner Luis Sanchez on Wednesday announced the grand opening of the West County Road 120 extension to Midkiff Road. This new infrastructure project, which began a year and a half ago, represents a significant milestone for the community, enhancing connectivity and accessibility in the region.

The project, valued at $2.8 million, spans just over a mile and aims to provide direct access from Midkiff Road to the Southern part of Loop 250 without the need to navigate through county neighborhoods. This new road will ease the burden on local neighborhoods and facilitate smoother transit for residents, a news release said.

Commissioner Sanchez highlighted the importance of this development, stating, “This new section of West County Road 120 is a critical addition to our infrastructure. It not only improves connectivity but also enhances the quality of life for our community members by reducing travel time and providing more direct routes. We’re committed to continuing these improvements to support the growth and development of Midland County.”

According to the release, the new road is part of a broader initiative to expand and improve the infrastructure south of the interstate. This effort is designed to support economic development, making the area more attractive for new businesses and housing developments. Commissioner Sanchez emphasized the long-term benefits, noting that the increased accessibility will also be crucial in emergency situations, allowing for quicker response times.

“We understand that the ongoing road construction can be frustrating for residents,” Sanchez acknowledged. “However, these projects are essential for our long-term goals. By investing in new roads and infrastructure, we are laying the foundation for future growth and ensuring that Midland County remains a great place to live and do business.”

The next steps for the county include the opening of the new section of South County Road 1210 and South and West County Road 130, expected in about a month. Additionally, a new traffic light will be installed at the intersection of West County Road 120 and South County Road 1232 (Antelope Trail) by early January, further enhancing safety and traffic flow in the area.
