Police: Theft leads to chase, gunfire

An Odessa man was arrested Thursday morning after police said he chased a man for several blocks and opened fire on him because the other man stole his subwoofer.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, Travis Jones called 911 to report he was chasing a man who came to his home to buy a subwoofer, but then left without paying for it.

Jones, who called from 87th and Loop 338, refused to stop following the other man and moments later reported there had been a wreck at 52nd Street and the Loop and he had the man at gunpoint, the report stated.

When officers arrived, they found Caycen Mutai on the ground with his hands behind his back and Jones pointing a gun at him, the report stated.

According to the report, Jones said he had helped Mutai load the subwoofer he’d posted for sale on social media, into Mutai’s Chevrolet Silverado and then Mutai had taken off at a high rate of speed eastbound on 87th Street.

Jones said he and his wife followed Mutai in their GMC Yukon.

According to the report, witnesses told officers they saw Jones use the shoulder to go around traffic stuck at 52nd Street and the Loop and cut Mutai off by pulling in front of him.

The witnesses said Jones got out of his vehicle, began banging on Mutai’s passenger window, pulled a gun and pointed it at Mutai’s truck, the report stated.

Mutai told officers that when he became scared for his life and tried to get away, Jones opened fire, striking his vehicle several times along with a bystander’s Toyota Rav 4, the report stated.

Mutai said he struck Jones’ car and another GMC Yukon while trying to get away and ended up crashing. According to the report, Mutai said Jones continued to fire at his truck, striking it several times, so he got out and ran.

The report stated Mutai said he stopped running through a field and gave himself up because Jones was still shooting at him.

The driver of the Toyota told police she saw Jones get out of his vehicle and heard two rounds of gunshots, the report stated. She said it was then she realized the rear of her vehicle had been struck by a bullet.

Jones was arrested on suspicion of deadly conduct and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and booked into the Ector County jail with bonds set at $65,000.

Mutai was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor theft. He was released Friday after posting a $1,000 bond.
