The OPD Honor Guard attended the 2019 Texas Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony, which was recently held in Austin. During the service, Governor Abbott presented medals to the families of the fallen officers from Texas. The OPD Honor Guard will soon head to Washington D.C. for National Police Week, which takes place Sunday, May 12th through Saturday, May 18th. This week is set aside to recognize the service and sacrifice of U.S. law enforcement that have been killed in the line of duty. The public is encouraged to replace their porch lights with blue bulbs during National Police Week.
On Friday, May 17, 2019, members of the Odessa Police Department, Midland Police Department, Ector County Sheriff’s Office, Midland County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Lubbock Police Department and other local agencies will hold a memorial service to honor fellow officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The service begins at 10:00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 6801 East Highway 80, Odessa, Texas. The Odessa Police Department will conduct a brief memorial service for all of the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty the past year in Texas.
