Odessa Christian fundraising for playground equipment

Odessa Christian School has been awarded a grant for new playground equipment, thanks to one of its board members and the support of Legacy Builders.

But the school needs the community’s help to make the new playground a reality. People may donate through the school’s website odessa-christian.org or Facebook page, facebook.com/odessachristian

Some parts of the current playground are more than 50 years old, according to their website.

There is a GaGa pit that’s only a couple of years old, Principal Pam Walker said.

According to the GaGa Center website, “GaGa is a fast paced, high energy sport played in an octagonal pit. The more players the better! Dubbed a kinder, gentler version of dodge ball, the game is played with a soft foam ball, and combines the skills of dodging, striking, running, and jumping, while trying to hit opponents with a ball below the knees.”

The total cost for both the big and the little playground, including ground covering, amounts to $182,000. While they have secured some funding through the grant, they need to raise approximately $70,000 to cover the school’s portion of the expenses, excluding installation costs, the school website says.

Walker said Sept. 12, they were at $6,000.

They plan to install a playground for the older students and one for the younger kids as they can’t use the same playground.

The school was planning a drive-thru fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse where parents order a family meal the week before and then drive up to pick their kids up, the Roadhouse food truck will be waiting for them and hand them their meal.

Odessa Christian also has dine to donate every month in-house.

“This year, we’re going to do in-house once and drive through once every other month,” Walker said.
