Murder suspect tied to earlier violence

An Odessa teen facing a possible murder charge in connection with the June 14 death of a 65-year-old man has been linked to a shooting that took place 11 days earlier.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, officers received a shots fired call from 49th and Dixie around 9:20 p.m. June 30 and when they arrived, a man told them he was turning right onto 49th Street from Dixie when a blue Dodge Ram almost crashed into him.

The man said he and the driver of the Ram stopped and the other driver fired a gun at his vehicle, which was occupied by two other people, the report stated.

Detectives linked the 9 mm cartridge casings they found at the scene to a Glock 26 used in the death of James Francis Johnson, the report stated. That gun was found in Brayden Roupp’s possession.

According to the report, the alleged victim in the road rage incident identified Roupp as the man who shot at his vehicle.

Roupp, who was already in the Ector County jail in Johnson’s death, was arrested on suspicion of three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon Friday.

He remains in custody on surety bonds totaling $375,000.

According to OPD records, Roupp confessed to shooting Johnson and video surveillance shows Roupp and a 16-year-old girl dragging Johnson into his house moments after he was shot multiple times.

The girl is being held in the juvenile detention center.
