MIDLAND Midland ISD has announced that the naming and selection of a mascot for the new elementary school that was approved with the 2023 school bond is underway.
The school name and mascot will be based on community, parent, student and staff nominations through the New Elementary Naming Nomination Survey. The survey will remain open for nominations until August 14, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. A link to the survey will also be housed on midlandbond2023.com, shared by social media and in an email to all employees and parents. After the survey period has closed, the Naming Committee (as appointed under CW (LOCAL)) will review all submissions and make a recommendation to the school board for approval.
The name must meet one of the following criteria:
- In memory of a person who has served the district or community, especially in service to children.
- In memory of any person who has made a significant contribution to society and/or education and his or her name shall lend prestige and status to an institution of learning.
- A local residential or geographic area; or
- A District property donor or his or her family members.
“The addition of the new elementary school is very exciting for the students of Midland and our community as a whole,” said Jessica Redman, Executive Director of School Leadership. “The naming of the school is a major milestone in this process. This is the community’s school, and it is important to receive feedback from Midlanders.”
“Upon recommendation of the naming committee, a proposed name and mascot will be submitted to the Board for approval in September. Following this approval, the name will be formally announced,” said Morgan Robertson, principal of the new school.
The new elementary school is located near the Lone Star Trails area in northeast Midland and construction is underway. The school is projected to open in August of 2025. The school will be home for up to 830 students and will be approximately 92,500 square feet. This project is part of the 2023 School Bond.
