Medical Center Health System will be hosting a free health and wellness event from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday that will be open to the public.
The event, known as “Take Time For Your Health” will take place at the MCH Center for Health and Wellness, located at 8050 Hwy. 191 and will feature important health information, screenings, activities and more.
“This will be the first time that we’ve done this event,” Community Relations Manager at MCH Susan Thornton said. “We realized that many members of our community have missed the opportunities of health screenings that were available to them at the Permian Basin Health Fair. And the Permian Basin Health Fair which is presented by MCH has now had to be cancelled for two years. We weren’t able to do it in 2021 because of the safety precautions of COVID. So, this is not a replacement but what it is is an opportunity to the community to get some of those screenings that our community members missed out on at the health fair. We’re offering these things to the community because our focus is on keeping Odessa and the rest of the community healthy and well.”
Among the things that will be provided at this weekend’s event will include COVID-19 vaccines, blood pressure and blood sugar check as well as health information, screenings and activities for cholesterol, triglycerides and PSA, hands-only CPR, fall risk assessment, adult flu shots, flexibility testing, balance testing, heart attack risk assessment and ask the pharmacist.
“We’ll have lab tests that will be available for a nominal fee,” Thornton said. “These are the same that will be available at the health fair as well as lab screenings.”
As for the COVID shots, Thornton says they will be offering vaccines for those needing their first, second or boosters.
“Anyone coming in for anything other than that first shot, they must bring in their vaccine card so that our staff knows where they are in that process,” Thornton said.
Prior to the health and wellness event will be a Valenzuela Family Memorial 5K run and 2K walk that Mission Fitness will be hosting.
That run and walk will start at 8 a.m. at the same location as the health and wellness event and the cost is $25.
All proceeds will benefit the family of fallen Ector County Hospital District Police Department officer Sgt. Daniel Valenzuela who was killed in a traffic accident last month in San Antonio along with his father and grandmother.
“Sgt. Daniel Valenzuela was a member of our MCH family,” Thornton said. “The staff at Mission Fitness thought that this was something they could do as well to support the family so they are hosting this 5K run and 2K walk and all the proceeds from people registering for it will benefit the Valenzuela family. It’s another way for MCH to take care of the loss of one of our own.”
