Man charged with choking girlfriend

A 23-year-old man was arrested after deputies say he choked his girlfriend.

Joseph Jernigan was charged with assault to a family or household member by impeding breathing or circulation (family violence), a third-degree felony.

The assault happened Jan. 18 when the complainant, identified as 18-year-old Elianna Galindo, filed a report that she was assaulted by her boyfriend, Jernigan, the Ector County Sheriff’s Office probable cause affidavit detailed. Galindo stated she and Jernigan have lived together for two months.

Galindo told deputies the assault happened around 1:15 a.m. Jan. 18 at their home located in the 9300 block of W. 25th Street. Galindo stated that Jernigan assaulted her, caused bodily injury and restricted her airway by strangling her, which nearly left her unconscious.

The assault was done without consent and Galindo wants to file charges against Jernigan, the affidavit stated.

Jernigan was booked into the Ector County Law Enforcement Center on Jan. 18, jail records show. He has one bond totaling $7,500 and was still in custody as of Wednesday afternoon.
