Man arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty

A 30-year-old Odessa man was taken to jail Monday after a woman called 911 to report her neighbor was beating a German Shepherd puppy over the head with a shovel.

When an officer arrived at the home in the 300 block of Carver around 9 p.m. Monday, the resident, Marcos Loya Frias, told him he’d found an injured dog in the alley behind his house, according to an OPD report.

The officer wrote in his report the dog was six to eight months old and had blood coming from its nose, mouth and head and dried blood all over its paws and fur.

“The dog’s left eye was completely blood shot from severe head trauma,” the officer wrote.

Frias confessed to a Spanish-speaking officer he’d hit the dog with a blunt object after it attempted to bite him; officers did not observe any bite marks on him, the report said.

Frias was booked into the Ector County Law Enforcement Center on suspicion of cruelty to non-livestock animal and the dog was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic for what the officers suspected might be life-threatening injuries.

Frias was released on an $8,000 surety bond Tuesday.
