Man accused of choking girlfriend

An Odessa man was arrested Wednesday on multiple warrants, including one that was issued when his girlfriend told authorities he repeatedly choked her and forcibly took her car keys and phones away from her.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, officers received a disturbance call around 2:30 a.m. Jan. 20 from the 400 block of Ellis Drive. When they arrived, Israel Porras’ girlfriend of one year told them Porras had grabbed her, thrown her on the bed and choked her.

The woman said she was able to kick him off, but he grabbed her by the hair, repeatedly punched her, threw her to the ground and choked her again, the report stated.

During the altercation, the woman said Porras grabbed her car keys and cell phone and forced her into a car, but she was able to get out and go to a relative’s home where she called 911, the report stated.

A warrant was issued for Porras and he was arrested by the Ector County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday on suspicion of evading arrest or detention and suspicion of robbery/family violence, a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison.

Porras was also booked in the Ector County jail on the other outstanding warrants. One day prior to the alleged assault, an Odessa officer reported Porras took off from him moments after he found him unconscious and slumped over the wheel of his car at 23rd Street and Center Avenue. A warrant for evading arrest with a vehicle was issued.

In another case, Porras was accused of stealing cameras and tools from a former employer. According to OPD reports, a warrant was issued for burglary of a building after Porras was seen committing the theft by surveillance cameras.

Porras was also arrested on two criminal mischief warrants.

He remains in the Ector County jail on surety bonds totaling $63,000.
