The Life Center, 802 N. Washington St., in Odessa held a groundbreaking Thursday for a 5,000-square-foot addition to its current quarters.
The estimated $2 million project is expected to be complete in September.
The buildings will not be physically connected. The current two-story building is about 4,000 square feet, but Executive Director Judy Rouse said they can only use about 1,500 square feet.
The building will be repurposed as a young moms mentor program, Rouse said.
“We are an alternative to abortion, education, support organization. We’re faith-based, nonprofit,” Rouse said.
She added that they started in 1979 as a phone bank. The Odessa office opened in 2013.
Andrews was the first satellite, followed by Odessa and then Big Spring.
“This one we’re purposing to also offer the same services in Midland, which is STI, STD testing and treatment — free. There’s cost that you’re over 25 …,” Rouse said.
The estimated project cost is about $2 million. The project is supported by donations.
The architect is JSA Architects. Cooper Construction is building the facility and several engineering firms are involved in the project.
Rouse said The Life Center serves about 9,000 people at all of its locations and before COVID saw 18,000 to 25,000 students.
