Investigators unable to determine cause of fatal September fire

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was unable to determine what caused a blaze that took the life of a 52-year-old West Odessan last September.

According to the Ector County Sheriff’s Office, firefighters learned of a fire in the 2500 block of Conger Road in West Odessa shortly before 3 a.m. Sept. 7 and when they arrived they found a fully engulfed recreational vehicle/camper. After the fire was extinguished, they found the remains of Quentin David Norman.

A report released Thursday by the State Fire Marshal’s Office said much of the RV was entirely consumed by the fire.

While investigators were able to rule out the weather as a potential ignition source, they could not rule out the RV’s electrical system, gas system or water heater. Nor could they rule out the possibility smoking materials or “human involvement,” the report stated.

According to the report, the RV owner told investigators Norman was a homeless transient who he allowed to stay in the RV so he could keep an eye on the property.
