Interstate 20 mainlanes and bridges open this week

Midkiff Road and Cotton Flat Road also open in July

New I-20 Overpass at Midkiff Road

MIDLAND Drivers along I-20 will notice a traffic pattern change this week. Midkiff and Cotton Flat bridges are now substantially complete and the new I-20 mainlane bridges are scheduled to open Saturday, July 13. Interstate traffic will pass over Midkiff Road and Cotton Flat Road on the new bridges. During the traffic pattern switch, drivers are advised to use an alternate route if possible. All lanes are scheduled to be open by Sunday, July 14, a Texas Department of Transportation news release said.

According to the release, Midkiff Road at I-20 is scheduled to open in both directions no later than Tuesday, July 16, while Cotton Flat Road will have one lane in each direction open no later than July 26. Both roadways will have temporary stop signs in place until signals are installed at the frontage road intersections.

Phased demolition of the former Midkiff/Cotton Flat bridges, and roadway approaches began mid-2023. Since then, construction crews have worked around the clock to ensure mainlanes and bridges are open prior to the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year.

James Construction was awarded the $36.3 million Midkiff bridge project, and FNF Construction was awarded the $68.5 million Cotton Flat bridge project, the release said.

During these major traffic control events, motorists are reminded that state law requires them to obey warning signs and traffic control devices. Although Midkiff and Cotton Flat Roads are open for pedestrian use, we ask that pedestrians use caution as this is still an active construction zone and most of the ADA/Pedestrian elements are not yet in place. TxDOT is committed to providing a safe environment for all.
