What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)? It is one of the most tested therapeutic approaches in the field of counseling. Research for EMDR began with Francien Shapiro. She had been reading information about eye movement when she was diagnosed with cancer. As she walked through the park, she was moving her eyes between the trees when she noticed her anxiety about her diagnosis began to reside.
She began researching the idea that eye movement can help desensitize distressing or traumatic events. Many of the tests for EMDR were done with soldiers returning from war zones to help them reintegrate into life without the nightmares and flashbacks of the traumatic experiences they lived.
Fast forward, 35 years Francine Shapiro’s work continues to impact the world today. EMDR is used worldwide to help individuals processing distressing events. Many people say, “I do not need EMDR, I do not have any trauma that I have experienced in my life.” EMDR is no longer just about healing trauma, it helps with many different distressing events, such as bullying, parents arguing, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, addictions, eating disorders, and the list continues.
