MIDLAND Holy Cross Catholic High School has settled into their permanent location and are expanding their facilities. There was a groundbreaking ceremony on May 18 to officially kick off the beginning of construction for the Tomlin Gymnasium.

“The entire HCCHS community is so excited for this day to arrive. The addition of a new gymnasium to our campus will enhance not only the curricular program options available to students, but it will also take our extracurricular athletics programs to the next level. We cannot wait for the athletic teams at Holy Cross to welcome visiting opponents into our home venue for the very first time.” says Bradley Gibson, president of Holy Cross Catholic High School.

Holy Cross currently offers football, volleyball, basketball (men’s and women’s) and track. The students have been dedicated to participating in sports and have been utilizing other gymnasiums that local community organizations have offered. As the school grows, they will add more athletic programs and are looking forward to having their own place to practice and host games and events.

“This project is the first of many facility additions and enhancements to the campus. Even in the third year, our school has begun to show fruit of the commitment to academic excellence in the classroom.” Gibson said in a news release. “We are also committed to the same excellence in athletics and this new construction is evidence of our commitment.”

Holy Cross doesn’t plan to stop after the gymnasium is built, the release said. They will continue to focus on the needs of the students and determine which additions need to be made to the campus next. With the growth of student enrollment will come the growth of facilities.

“The board would like to extend a special thank you to the donors that have made this project possible. They have supported Holy Cross’s mission despite the impacts of a pandemic and economic shock to our local economy. Their generosity is a sign of their commitment to the two goals for Holy Cross students: College & Heaven.” Gibson said.

The Holy Cross gymnasium is named the Tomlin Gymnasium and will be used for all Holy Cross programs, as well as for events for The Way Retreat Center. There is a need for a facility like this to be available for various programs, retreats and speakers. The gym will be a tremendous asset not only to Holy Cross, but also to The Way Retreat Center, the release said.

“This gym will enhance the Christian Retreat experience that will continue to be held here especially for the youth that attend our Christian Retreats,” said Dan Varner, board president of The Way Retreat Center.
