Though it has been shown that students are best able to learn and grow when they are physically in school, Ector County ISD understands parent and student concerns about COVID-19.
Beginning Nov. 1, ECISD will offer a Virtual Academy option to qualifying students. The deadline to enroll in the ECISD Virtual Academy is Oct. 22.
Students who choose the Virtual Academy will not be enrolled in their home campus and therefore may not participate in activities on that campus. No ECISD teachers will teach Virtual Academy courses, as the district has contracted with a third-party to provide the teachers as well as the curriculum. Parents may contact the ECISD Curriculum & Instruction Department with any questions at 432-456-8492, a news release said.
The Virtual Academy is open to students prekindergarten through 12th grade. Students of any age who qualify for homebound services as medically fragile are also eligible. However, restrictions apply and students are not eligible for the Virtual Academy if they:
- Did not perform well in virtual learning during the 2020-2021 school year.
- Failed a STAAR or end of course exam.
- Have 10 or more unexcused absences.
Parents/guardians who are interested in the Virtual Academy option should complete the digital Virtual Academy Parent Survey, then, if applicable, the ECISD Virtual Academy Commitment Form. Families needing assistance can call 432-456-8492.
ECISD encourages all students to attend school in person, as it is shown to be the best option for academic improvement and social and emotional support, yet, is glad to be able to offer this Virtual Academy option for qualifying students, the release said.
