Ector County ISD announced its Board of Trustees has been named the Region 18 nominee for TASA’s 2021 Outstanding School Board, a press release detailed.
TASA stands for Texas Association of School Administrators, and the organization sponsors this recognition program annually. ECISD’s Board of Trustees is one of 15 school boards in Texas to earn this nomination this year.
“We are thrilled for our seven school board members,” ECISD Superintendent Scott Muri stated in the press release. “This honor is a testament to the incredible commitment they have shown to our students, staff, and community.”
Ector County ISD school board members are Carol Gregg, Position 1; Delma Abalos, Position 2; Donna C. Smith, Position 3; Chris Stanley, Position 4; Steve Brown, Position 5; Tammy Hawkins, Position 6; and Nelson Minyard, Position 7.
“Our Trustees have provided strong and steady leadership through unprecedented crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and a mass shooting. While focusing on immediate needs, our Trustees have, at the same time, given our District an unwavering vision for the future,” Muri added in the press release.
That vision for the future is reportedly outlined in ECISD’s bold and innovative strategic plan. That plan is centered on three core themes: foundational excellence in day-to-day work; investing heavily in our talented ECISD team (which was illustrated in June when the board passed a balanced budget that included raises for all employees); and ensuring each student’s learning journey prepares them for whatever future they choose to pursue.
“We are honored to be able to recognize the Ector County ISD Board of Trustees for their steadfast commitment to supporting students and staff during one of the most challenging years our great nation has ever experienced,” Dewitt Smith, executive director/CEO, Region 18 Education Service Center, stated in the press release. “Despite the countless COVID challenges, the ECISD Board and Dr. Muri maintained a laser-like focus on recruiting and retaining high-caliber teachers through several groundbreaking initiatives such as Opportunity Culture, Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) and National Board Certification. We congratulate the Ector County ISD Board on the well-deserved recognition. We are rooting for them as their nomination moves forward to the state-level.”
Texas school superintendents who are TASA members and meet other criteria may nominate their boards of trustees for the TASA School Board Awards, the press release detailed. Committees of TASA members organized by Texas’ regional education service centers review the nominations and select up to two school boards for consideration for the state-level awards: one with fewer than 1,000 students and one with 1,000 or more students.
