ECISD art show goes virtual

Without a venue to accommodate the Ector County ISD annual end of year art show, art teachers started thinking about what to do.

George H.W. Bush New Tech Odessa art teacher Jesus Valeriano thought of the idea to create a website, making it easier to reach more people.

“I actually started creating the bones of the whole website and then the teachers helped me to upload the work and the tabs and things like that,” Valeriano said. ‘I think it was a pretty cool idea because it’s easier to go and see the artwork, you know, from the from the (comfort) of your your bedroom …,” or wherever you are.

Valeriano said there are probably more than 1,000 pieces online because the shows for the elementary, middle and high schools are all together instead of having separate shows.

“Plus, we have the senior shows, which is you know, a separate section where the seniors get to showcase their best artwork …,” he added.

Valeriano said teachers were asked to submit 25 to 30 pieces of the work they want to showcase. Each student can only have two works, unless they are seniors. Each senior gets five pieces per senior show.

The same expectations are in place as when the art is shown in a physical venue.

So instead of framing, they are now worried about cropping.

“It was a good idea. We like the museum and the fact that the kids can see the artwork hanging, but this year it was so much more relaxed for all of us,” Valeriano said.

He added that he thinks they’ll have the show in the same format again.

“It’s so much easier to reach more people to showcase (the work),” he said.

It also makes the work more approachable.

Valeriano said the work will always be available online.
