The Choice School application window in Ector County ISD is now open and there will be an ECISD Live event at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 to talk about it.
“We will talk specifically about choice schools and opportunities in ECISD,” Superintendent Scott Muri said, “so we’ll feature not only our magnet programs, but also the programmatic choices that exist within our elementaries, middle and high schools.”
In his media call Wednesday, Muri said information is now available on the district website.
The application window for elementary and middle schools closes Jan. 15. There is no deadline for high schools; it is first come, first served. Choice high schools are Odessa Collegiate Academy, OCTECHS and George H.W. Bush New Tech Odessa.
On a separate topic, Muri said the FMH Foundation has donated $550,000 to the district’s fine and performing arts programs.
“This year, these dollars will be invested in musical devices for our students, specifically we’ve got some pianos that we’ll be bringing in to several of our high schools. We’re thrilled at this opportunity. The FMH Foundation is a great partner in the arts for ECISD. Over the last several years, they’ve provided funding that allowed us to really invest and enhance our fine and performing arts opportunity — everything from, again, musical instruments to uniforms — for our students both at Odessa High School and Permian High School for fine and performing arts upgrades in some of our facilities. But we are grateful, once again, for the significant investment of $550,000 made this week by the FMH Foundation into the fine and performing arts programming that we have in ECISD. Kids won this week because of that investment …,” Muri said.
“… We appreciate the FMH Foundation,” he added.
The pianos are Steinway Spirios.
Saturday night is a big occasion in the City of Odessa and Ector County as the annual parade of lights processes through downtown Odessa, he said.
Organized by Downtown Odessa Inc., the line-up begins at 3 p.m. in the Odessa College parking lot beside the Sports Center off University Boulevard and the parade begins at 6:30 p.m.
This year, it will feature a group of ECSID students that have been working for the last several months to create “a pretty exciting opportunity that you’ll see traveling through the Parade of Lights,” Muri said.
“Our career and technical education students at the high schools have been engaged in the creation of a pretty exciting vehicle, if you will, that will travel the parade route on Saturday night. They’ll be able to showcase their pretty amazing talent as we share this experience with our entire community …,” Muri added.
