Odessa police charged a couple Friday after one of them reportedly crashed her vehicle while she was driving intoxicated with her two children inside.
Officers were first called around 5:56 p.m. Friday at Dollar General, 3551 Faudree Road, an Odessa Police Department news release said.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with 27-year-old Erica Luna, the release stated, who told police she let her girlfriend, 23-year-old Tommi Umu, take her red 2012 Lincoln Navigator with her two children inside.
A few minutes later, police were called about a major crash at Eastridge and Billy Hext Roads.
The release detailed witness reporting a red Lincoln Navigator traveling eastbound on Eastridge Road, and running the stop sign at Billy Hext Road before causing a crash.
Officers identified the driver of the Navigator as Umu, and she also had her two children as passengers: a 10-month-old girl and a 2-year-old boy, the release stated, and Umu was reportedly intoxicated.
Umu attempted to leave the scene with the infant while leaving the second child in a car seat on the sidewalk, the release said. And while attempting to detain Umu, she kicked one of the officers in the groin and began to spit and kick at them while being placed in the back of the OPD patrol unit.
Umu was charged with assault on a public servant, a third-degree felony, driving while intoxicated with a child passenger and endangering a child, state jail felonies, and resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor.
Luna, because she allowed an intoxicated driver to operate her vehicle with two young children inside, was charged with two counts of abandoning or endangering a child.
Jail records show Umu and Luna were taken to the Ector County Detention Center Sunday. Umu has five bonds totaling $39,500 and Luna has two bonds totaling $15,000.
