A woman was arrested at a hospital in Alpine on charges stemming for the death of her husband.
Clara Ledward was charged with murder, a first-degree felony, and tampering with physical evidence, a third-degree felony.
The Odessa Police Department took custody of Ledward on Thursday at a hospital in Alpine, an OPD press release detailed. Ledward’s arrest stemmed from the death of her husband, Jacob Ledward, on May 16, in Odessa.
Early into the investigation, OPD reportedly became aware that Clara Ledward had fled to Mexico. The FBI assisted by issuing an unlawful flight to avoid prosecution arrest warrant in order for OPD to work with the Government of Mexico in her apprehension.
On July 29, Ledward was taken into custody by Mexican authorities in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico, the press release stated. During her arrest, Ledward sustained non-life threatening gunshot wounds. The Mexican authorities extradited Ledward to the United States and to Brewster County for medical care.
In the coming days, OPD will reportedly be working with partner agencies to ensure the safe transportation of Ledward back to Ector County for prosecution.
