Comedian Lopez returns to West Texas

Comedian George Lopez will be returning to the Permian Basin this week to perform his standup special and the famous actor enjoys coming to the Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center.

“I love that theater,” Lopez said in a phone interview with the Odessa American. “It’s always been great to me. It’s a great place to perform. I’ve always enjoyed it. You know, Texas is like a lot of different states in one state. I enjoy that. It’s a bit of a challenging but I enjoy it.”

Lopez will be performing in his “Allrriighhttt, Texas! Tour” at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center.

His last performance in the Permian Basin was just two years ago when he was doing his “OMG Hi! Comedy Tour.”

Lopez’s illustrious and multi-faceted career encompasses television, film, stand-up comedy and late-night television.

Throughout his career, he’s embraced his ethnicity and confronting racial stereotypes while fighting for his community on and off the stage.

He says his stand-up special will deal with a lot of current events such as the election.

Recently, he’s been busy with his return to television in his comedy show “Lopez vs. Lopez,” which airs on NBC.

The show, which will enter its third season this fall, features his real-life daughter, Mayan Lopez.

The third season is set to premiere on Oct. 18.

The show first aired back in 2022, 15 years after his first show George Lopez ended.

“I think working with my daughter has been an amazing experience,” Lopez said. “Also, I hadn’t done television in a format like this since my first show. Doing a show with a multi-camera is a bit of a dance. I felt like in these last 32 episodes that it’s something that was hard for me to get the first time, but it’s something that I’m happy that I’ve still got. I’m happy to be able to be funny and spontaneous at the same time.”

His first show ran on ABC for six seasons before being canceled.

A few people that he worked with behind the scenes on his first show are back working on his new show, as well as people who grew up watching his first show.

“A couple of people from the first show didn’t make it, but then this year, we hired the script supervisor who saw all 120 episodes of the first show and we hired her to work on this show,” Lopez said.

He’s excited for this weekend’s show.

“That area has always been good for me to perform,” Lopez said. “I know that when people come to see me perform, they’ll definitely see new material. They’ll have a good time if they’ve seen me perform and an even better time if they’ve never seen me perform.”
