Brothers arrested in connection to shooting

Two brothers have been arrested in connection with a drug-related shooting in January after they were identified by a third suspect.

According to Odessa Police Department reports, officers learned a few vehicles and a home had been struck by gunfire shortly before 10 p.m. Jan. 7 on South Lincoln and West Eighth Street. A little over an hour later, they learned a 35-year-old man had been shot multiple times near 14th Street and North Tom Green because he didn’t want to sell some men marijuana for $40, he had quoted them $60.

At each of the shooting scenes, officers found 9 mm and AK-74 shell casings, the reports stated. They also identified the suspects’ vehicle as a dark gray newer model Dodge Durango after watching some surveillance videos.

OPD officers learned Ector County Sheriff’s Office deputies were also investigating multiple shootings involving a dark gray Dodge Durango.

After an extensive search involving interviews and cell phone searches, officers obtained arrest warrants for Alexander Hernandez, 28, a convicted felon.

Hernandez was arrested Jan. 14 on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. The assault charges are second-degree felonies punishable by two to 20 years in prison.

Hernandez told investigators he was in the back seat of the Durango during the shooting at 14th and Tom Green and identified brothers, Israel Olivas, 28, and Jesus Olivas, 27, as the shooters, according to reports.

Investigators found a Dodge Durango in the backyard of the brothers’ aunt’s residence and shell casings inside the Durango matched those found at the crime scenes, the reports stated.

Israel Olivas was arrested Feb. 3 on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, three counts of deadly conduct and three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. He was released from the Ector County jail Feb. 9 after posting surety bonds totaling $510,000.

Jesus Olivas was arrested on the same charges Tuesday and remains in custody on a U.S. Marshal hold.
