Teresa Evan, a member of the Balmorhea Lake Improvement Group on Facebook, spoke with the Odessa American about events that have recently happened or upcoming at Balmorhea Lake.
One of the first feats the group accomplished was picking up trash.
Evan said volunteers picked up enough trash to fill up roll-off dumpsters.
“About a year and a half ago or so, some folks who live out at the lake and folks who live out in Balmorhea and land owners that have land near the lake got together informally,” she said. “It’s so beautiful there. Over the years, there have been a lot of trash accumulating and it was a little bit run down. We started holding clean up events and then we did some things where we got trash cans donated.”
The most recent event that took place at Balmorhea Lake was a group of volunteers created a labyrinth at the lake on March 11. BLIG also detailed there will be some rock art and additional covered picnic tables near the area in the future.
Evan discussed a kite flying event scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Sunday.
The admission for the lake is $7 for any persons over 14 years old. Evan said she hopes there will be a couple dozen people flying kites this coming Sunday.
“I would consider it a success if we could get 25 people out there with kites,” she said.
Though volunteers picked up trash in the past, Evan said BLIG is going to celebrate Earth Day at 9 a.m. April 22 with another lake cleanup.
BLIG detailed in its press release that lunch will be provided for volunteers. Sign up for the event on Facebook at the Balmorhea Lake Improvement Group page. Evan said the page is listed as private and people have to answer a few questions before being accepted on the page.
“We are getting ready on Earth Day to have another cleanup day,” Evan said.
