Three MISD students named National Merit semi-finalists

MIDLAND Three Midland ISD seniors have been named National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists for the class of 2025. This is the first time Midland ISD has had semi-finalists since 2019, when a student went on to become a finalist.

This year’s distinguished semi-finalists are Legacy High Senior Jerry Rolston, Midland High Senior Caleb Brown, and Sanjana Vadlapatla, who is a member of the first senior class at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy.

Each of these semi-finalists completed a rigorous application process, which included PSAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test results, academic record, community service, leadership, employment, and awards received. National Merit semi-finalists are among the top academic performers in the nation and now have the opportunity to compete for National Merit Scholarships valued at nearly $26 million.

The National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, making this achievement a significant accomplishment.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and academic excellence of our students, their families, and their schools,” Amanda Melchor, Executive Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning, said in a news release. “We are incredibly proud of Jerry, Caleb, and Sanjana.”

MISD will recognize these semi-finalists at the October Board of Trustees meeting. Finalists will be announced in February 2025, with scholarship winners to follow in the spring.
