MIDLAND The Literacy Coalition of the Permian Basin proudly announces the successful semester completion of the inaugural cohort from the English as a Second Language (ESL) program, hosted by the Warren Foundation and the Midland County Public Library. This milestone event marks a significant achievement for the students and the community, showcasing the profound impact of accessible education and community support.
The ESL classes, which began on March 6, have been a beacon of opportunity for the diverse community of Midland. Held at the Midland County Public Library three days a week, these classes have provided students with the critical language skills needed to improve their English, secure better employment, and enhance their overall future prospects.
“This program has been a transformative experience for our students,” Adrian Carrasco, Interim Executive Director of the Literacy Coalition of the Permian Basin, said in a news release. “We are thrilled to see how much they have grown and are excited to support their continued journey.”
The program was in high demand with 200 phone inquiries but a maximum capacity of only 25 students for the initial class. The students’ dedication and hard work have paid off, and their success is a testament to the program’s effectiveness and the community’s need for such initiatives, the release said.
The journey does not end here. The current cohort will continue their studies through the Summer of 2024, thanks to the generous support of volunteers and the provision of classroom space at Stonegate Church. This ongoing commitment ensures that students receive the consistent support they need to achieve their goals.
Many students have shared their personal aspirations, which include improving their English proficiency to better integrate into the community, enhance their job prospects, and build a brighter future for themselves and their families. Their stories are a powerful reminder of the importance of such educational programs.
The ESL classes will continue to be offered, resuming in the fall, to accommodate more students eager to improve their language skills and seize new opportunities.
